Washington State AED Law – Dental Offices

In the United States more than 1000 people died today from something easily prevented. In the United States, Sudden Cardiac Arrest kills more people every year than car accidents, breast and prostrate cancer, handguns, fires and AIDS – combined! New Washington State legislation is helping to cut down on this epidemic. Effective March 2, 2009 all dental offices in the state of Washington using any form of anesthetic agent are required to have an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) onsite. Additionally, “the dentist and staff must be prepared to use this equipment in an emergency” and all “dental staff providing direct patient care…must hold current and valid health care provider basic life support (BLS) certification,” according to Washington State’s Department of Health WAC § 246-817-701.
